It’s an immersive\, interactive museum with amazing sights and sounds!\n\nPanels focus on topics such as the development of the modern recording industry and the artists who recorded at the Bristol Sessions\, including Ernest V. Stoneman\, Alfred G. Karnes\, El Watson\, The Carter Family\, and Jimmie Rodgers. The Bristol Sessions were the first recordings of The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers\, and they quickly became stars in the emerging “hillbilly” music industry. A timeline of audio technology introduces you to the different ways to produce and listen to music\, and the Variety & Voice gallery highlights the history and beauty of the iconic instruments that have created the recognizable sounds of country music. \nVisiting the core exhibits at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum is not a passive experience – we want you to explore the music through a variety of interactive and immersive experiences. Sound surrounds you throughout your visit. You can delve into local history to set the scene for the Bristol Sessions story\, and explore the sounds of the Sessions through clips of all of the songs issued by Victor Records from the Bristol recordings. In other parts of the gallery\, you can listen to the ways later musicians from Lead Belly to Nirvana have arranged some of these classic songs\, give those tunes new sounds at the mixing stations\, and belt out a song with family\, friends and fellow visitors at the sing-along station! \nYou can also engage in multiple film and theater experiences\, beginning with the Orientation Theater film “Bound to Bristol.” In the Greasy Strings Theater\, we explore the philosophy and techniques behind the playing of the 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings. You can take a pew in our small chapel to hear local gospel groups speak and sing about how faith has shaped music and our connection to it. The Immersion Theater makes you part of “the unbroken circle” – and gives you space to dance! Several shorter films explore oral histories of participants in the 1927 Bristol Sessions\, the career of Tennessee Ernie Ford\, and the impact of this music on TV and film. \n\nThe museum’s permanent exhibits won four awards at the 2015 Tennessee Association of Museums conference: Award of Excellence for Permanent Exhibits\, Award of Excellence for A/V – Mixing Station\, Award of Commendation for Chapel Film\, and the Past President’s Award of Excellence. We provide communities with the tools and support they need to teach children to play and dance to traditional old-time and bluegrass music. JAM introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region\, such as fiddle\, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization\, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program. \nBe sure to check out JAM Kids on Facebook and Instagram! \n \n \nThe JAM Program Model \nJAM is an after-school program for children in grades 4 – 8 and beyond that introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region\, such as fiddle\, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization\, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free\, and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program. \nJunior Appalachian Musicians ® is a registered trademark of Junior Appalachian Musicians\, Inc. \nIn JAM\, instrument instruction is often augmented by dance and vocal instruction as well as string band classes and group enrichment lessons\, which introduce children to additional Appalachian culture and history. The JAM program model provides children with opportunities to not only learn traditional music\, but to also perform in small and large groups. Field trips\, visiting artists and an introduction to the rich history of music unique to each local community further supplement program offerings. Each JAM program is encouraged to foster musical traditions by teaching local styles of traditional mountain music and dance to children. Instructors are also encouraged to teach students to learn music by ear\, as to preserve oral traditions as much as possible. Other teaching methodologies and instructional skills are covered in regional professional development and training sessions held multiple times per year and hosted by JAM. JAM also encourages student engagement across programs with regional performance and learning activities throughout the year. For a full list of benefits to affiliates\, click here. \nJAM believes that all children should have access to traditional old time and bluegrass music. It is recommended that each program provide financial assistance through scholarships to children in need. The program model bases tuition fees on student lunch status: $10/week for full pay children\, and $5/week for reduced pay children. \nClass sizes typically have a student teacher ratio of 8:1 or less. JAM mandates that each affiliated program conduct criminal background checks on their instructors\, directors\, and other staff members and volunteers. Programs must be held in public facilities accessible to the community. Junior Appalachian Musicians\, Inc prohibits discrimination against any persons on the bases of race\, color\, national origin\, disability\, sex\, gender identity\, religion\, reprisal\, political beliefs\, familial or parental status\, and sexual orientation. \nFor a full listing of affiliation requirements\, click here. \nHistory of JAM \nRealizing the need to preserve a vital aspect of mountain culture as well as the need for positive activities to underserved youth\, Helen White\, then a guidance counselor at Sparta Elementary School\, founded the first JAM program in Alleghany County\, NC in the spring of 2000 with help from other local musicians and educators. Interest in the program spread rapidly with assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts\, NC State Arts Council\, Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and “The Crooked Road – Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail.” \nIn 2007\, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation provided funding to allow the development of a regional infrastructure. The Dana Foundation\, Virginia Commission for Arts\, the Virginia Foundation for Humanities\, the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Harris and Frances Block Foundation and the Tides Foundation have provided funding for materials development. \n“Junior Appalachian Musicians” was incorporated in 2008 as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt corporation to promote a shared vision of JAM and to provide an umbrella through which to offer resources\, training materials and activities to benefit programs individually and collectively. Currently in nearly 30 locations in North Carolina\, South Carolina\, Tennessee and Virginia\, JAM affiliates are providing access to the joy of music to thousands of youth while instilling renewed interest and pride in their heritage. \nInterested in learning more about JAM? Originally\, window cards and other announcement posters were created to advertise upcoming entertainment events staged by troupes of traveling performers. By design\, they were printed on inexpensive paper or cardboard to last only a few months as they were nailed to telephone poles\, plastered onto the sides of buildings\, and placed in store windows. After the event\, most were discarded or left to deteriorate outdoors. This display features 52 rare\, original concert announcements\, dating back to as early as 1939\, that somehow survived over these many years. \nBased on the vast and wide-ranging collection of Tom Murphy\, the exhibit will give visitors a window into the careers and impact of numerous well-known musicians\, such as Roy Acuff\, Kitty Wells\, Flatt & Scruggs\, The Monroe Brothers\, Lulu Belle and Scotty\, Mac Wiseman\, Clarence “Tom” Ashley\, Jim and Jesse McReynolds\, and many others. The connection between many of these artists to early radio and barn-dance style shows – including Bristol’s very own Farm and Fun Time – is also explored. \nTours of the special exhibit “A Cardboard History of Blue Ridge Music” are included in the price of regular museum admission to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum\, or you may visit the special exhibit only at a reduced cost. Reduced museum admission pricing for seniors\, students\, active military\, and groups of 20 people or more are available. Additionally\, the museum is a participating member of Museums for All\, supporting those receiving food assistance (SNAP) benefits who may tour the museum for a minimal fee of $3 per person for up to four people. \n  URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/special-exhibit-a-cardboard-history-of-blue-ridge-music/ CATEGORIES:Museum,Special Exhibits ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/2024_BCMM_CardboardHistory-Web-1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240323T100000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240323T120000 DTSTAMP:20240318T235610 CREATED:20240118T172836Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240206T161119Z UID:10030806-1711188000-1711195200@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:Monthly Museum Volunteer Orientation DESCRIPTION:We want YOU to join our wonderful team of volunteers at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum! \nDate: Every 4th Saturday except for October & November (3rd Saturday) and December (No Training) \nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. \nLocation: Birthplace of Country Music Museum\, Learning Center \nIf you have a passion for Bristol and its musical legacy and love helping others\, our museum volunteer program is the perfect fit for you! \nMuseum volunteers play a vital role in a number of key areas behind the scenes and on the front lines\, such as working as a gallery assistant or docent\, helping out in The Museum Store\, working with the public at events\, concerts\, and programs\, assisting with behind the scenes administrative or collections work and so much more! Founded in 1879\, HSP is still designing and printing over 600 jobs a year\, using the original wood type found on countless posters advertising carnivals\, circuses\, and vaudeville and minstrel shows of years gone by\, combined with handcarved imagery that spans the history of the shop. Though the 144-year-old business is known for its 20th century country music posters\, the work the shop has put out over five generations in operation reflects changes in technology\, communication arts\, and commerce\, as well as the evolution of popular entertainment. Celene will also be revealing a “surprise poster” during this program! \nIn-person attendees can enjoy a curator-led tour of the museum’s current special exhibit A Cardboard History of Blue Ridge Music at 6:15pm\, which features several historic Hatch Show Print posters. \nPlease note: For those attending virtually via YouTube\, the live stream will originate on the Radio Bristol YouTube channel after 6:50pm EST.  If you load the channel page before 6:50pm\, and the live stream does not automatically appear\, please refresh the page after 6:50pm. \nAbout Celene Aubry \nCelene Aubry is the Director and Print Shop Manager at Hatch Show Print\, one of America’s oldest surviving letterpress show poster and design shops. While the business thrives as a letterpress\, expanded programming includes a visiting artist program\, a gallery showcasing print-centric art\, and hands-on tours and workshops from the education space. Radio Bristol’s Farm and Fun Time broadcasts live before a studio audience and recorded for television syndication on Blue Ridge PBS\, East Tennessee PBS\, and PBS North Carolina. It can be accessed on 100.1 FM in the Bristol area\, or online at ListenRadioBristol.org and on Radio Bristol’s free mobile app. Viewers may also tune in to watch through Radio Bristol’s Facebook page. \nAbout Pony Bradshaw \n \n\n\n\n\nOn his new album North Georgia Rounder\, Pony Bradshaw leads the listener on an exploration of the woods\, rivers\, and mountains of Appalachia\, more specifically\, the area for which the album is named and he’s called home for the past 15 years. “It’s got its hooks in me\,” Bradshaw says of North Georgia\, and it shows\, with songs that quickly establish a setting\, much like the one he initiated with the album’s predecessor\, Calico Jim. The sonic excursion includes stops along the Conasauga River\, visits to the holler\, and a few diversions—nearby Knoxville plays a supporting role\, as do Louisiana and Arkansas. It’s an impressionistic journey of introspection and connection all at once. \nWill Stewart’s tastefully-understated guitar leads and Philippe Bronchtein’s atmospheric pedal steel provide the perfect backdrop for Bradshaw’s impassioned vocals in lead-off track “Foxfire Wine.” Its swampy\, bluesy intro makes way for an interesting amalgamation of Sturgill Simpson and The Grateful Dead\, serving as the perfect aperitif for “a hell of a heaven and a hell of a show.” From that point on till the album wraps with the aptly titled “Notes on a River Town\,” not only do you see and hear North Georgia\, you even smell and taste it. \nTake\, for example\, “Safe in the Arms of Vernacular\,” a pensive\, melancholy track that delights all the senses and is reminiscent of Ray Lamontagne’s mellow side. When Bradshaw sings of the “bonafide gas mask” his Dad brought back from Desert Storm and describes the Saudi Arabian sand as turning to “glass sharp as a sultan’s sword\,” one can almost see it. As quickly as it sets the ever-vivid stage\, the track shifts its focus to a waitress downtown. “Draped in Bedouin gown\, smoking Kent cigarettes in the underground” in an attempt to “escape all those voices\,” she naturally drinks white wine—”Riesling room temp from a coffee cup\,” to be exact. \nA voracious reader\, Bradshaw credits his talent for expressing such rich details in his songs not so much to other songwriters but instead to books\, fiction\, short stories\, essays\, and literary criticism. With such colorful descriptions as “teeth stained red with Lebanese wine\, long hair … in sweeps of oil blacker than a cypress pool\,” one might assume he bases the subjects of his songs on real-life people he interacts with in North Georgia; instead\, Bradshaw describes them as “nameless characters” compiled from “fragments” he’s collected\, pieces that usually start with just a line or two. These fragments all add up to a remarkably cohesive 10-song collection\, despite Bradshaw being a self-professed admirer of (and writer of) the non-sequitur. This is thanks in no small part to his own masterful vocal delivery and the expert musicianship of his backing band\, one that includes the aforementioned Stewart and Bronchtein with Robert Green on bass\, Ryan Moore on drums\, and Jenna Mobley on fiddle. \n“I really enjoy records that are actual records of time\,” he explains. With this in mind\, Bradshaw looked to create an album that relied less on innovation and experimentation\, aspiring to capture the songs’ live spirit. He and his band did just that\, making North Georgia Rounder—vocals\, overdubs\, and all—in just five days at Jason Weinheimer’s Fellowship Hall Sound in Little Rock\, Arkansas\, where he had also tracked Calico Jim in 2020. \n“Me and balance … we’ve never really worked out\,” he confesses\, acknowledging the irony of his quest for order and structure despite having chosen a path that is often chaotic. But as he sings in the moody yet catchy “Holler Rose\,” “you’ve got to be willing to play the long game.” “If it’s worth it\, there’s a beauty in suffering\,” he explains. “It’s taken me a long time to realize that\, but I’m thankful for all those terrible decisions I’ve made.” \n“Every day\, I wrestle with the moral consequences of being a touring musician\,” he adds. “I’m always finding ways to make it okay to be doing this. I feel irresponsible sometimes\,” he professes\, “because I basically make my living off the goodwill of others and chance. So I’m always trying to battle those two things.” \n“The poet soon stops experimenting and innovating and starts his life’s work\,” Bradshaw expounds\, citing a quote from one of his favorite writers\, Wendell Berry. A single album as a life’s work may seem like a grand\, overambitious aspiration. But for Pony Bradshaw\, North Georgia Rounder is just that – a life’s work\, one that\, as he describes it\, is a culmination of “sweat and work and joy and pain and anger and patience and restraint.” \n\n\n\n\nAbout Shay Martin Lovette \n \nThe tale of wayfaring songwriter Shay Martin Lovette is shaped by an enduring creative pursuit\, an inseparable connection with the natural world\, and a deep appreciation of the nonpareil musical voices of the past. The True As They Come EP\, a new batch of homespun songs weaving intricate tales of retrospection\, self-discovery\, and the serene majesty of water will be released on April 26\, 2024. Like the winding rivers and tributaries of his Appalachian homeland\, Lovette’s music flows with emotional depth\, poetically exploring the beautiful melodies of the land and the human soul. \nLovette’s songcraft has elicited high praise from American Songwriter\, The Bluegrass Situation\, No Depression\, Under The Radar Magazine\, Glide Magazine\, and New Commute. In April of 2022\, Lovette and band capped off a tour in support of his album Scatter & Gather with a performance on the esteemed Watson Stage at Merlefest in Wilkesboro\, North Carolina. \nFarm and Fun Time is made possible by our generous sponsors Eastman Credit Union and Toyota of Bristol. Upon arriving\, the Illinois-born singer/songwriter/actor pursued a major life change\, working 12-hour days on a local farm—a turn of events that catalyzed an extraordinary burst of creativity and redefined his sense of purpose as an artist. On his new album Rhumba Country\, LaFarge reveals his newly heightened devotion to making music that channels pure joy. “There was a time when I glorified sadness because I lost sight of who I was\, but now I understand that creating and expressing joy is my gift\, and gifts are meant to be shared\,” he says. Reclaiming his voice\, LaFarge has recorded his boldest album yet. \nRhumba Country was initially shaped from material that emerged while LaFarge was deep in work on the farm. “I’d be pushing a plow or scattering seeds\, and the songs would just come to me\,” he recalls. “It was tremendously inspirational and made me realize that apart from singing\, farming is perhaps the oldest human art form.” But as he moved forward with his songwriting\, something felt undeniably amiss. LaFarge then spoke with fellow Midwestern transplant Elliot Bergman (Wild Belle)\, who suggested he return to city life in Los Angeles for a season so that the two musicians could work together—a collaboration that soon brought the rhumba to LaFarge’s country. As he immersed himself in the album’s creation\, LaFarge began dreaming up a kaleidoscopic sound informed by his love of music from far-ranging eras and corners of the globe\, including mambo\, tropicália\, rocksteady\, and mid-century American rock-and-roll. Co-produced along with Chris Seefried and Bergman and recorded in L.A.\, the resulting Rhumba Country is an invitation to come together to celebrate life and love. “The songs that naturally come to me are upbeat and make you wanna dance or at least bop your head—they’re all very colorful\,” says LaFarge. “I used to think of my music in dark blue\, but now I see it in technicolor.” \nReflecting on the origins of Rhumba Country\, LaFarge points to one of the most crucial revelations he experienced while farming: a newfound understanding of the uniquely human potential to be “conduits of continuous creation.” To that end\, his effort to provide listeners with “medicine for the soul” has led LaFarge toward a deeper level of dedication when it comes to nurturing his own spirit. “You have to live the life you’re singing in your songs—no matter what you’re going through\,” he says. “Everything will come out in your music whether you want it to or not. I’ve realized that the more I can pursue goodness and live in peace\, the more I can make the music I was put here to make.” And by living with intention and fully connecting with his truest purpose\, LaFarge might finally be ready to lay his head in a place he calls home. \nFor more information about Pokey LaFarge and to purchase his music\, visit PokeyLaFarge.net. \n  \n  \n  URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/1927-society-concert-series-feat-pokey-lafarge/ CATEGORIES:Museum,Special Events ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/2024_BCM_1927Concert_PokeyLafarge-Web.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240624T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240628T150000 DTSTAMP:20240318T235611 CREATED:20240306T202701Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240308T210202Z UID:10030831-1719219600-1719586800@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:2024 Pick Along Summer Camp - Intermediate DESCRIPTION:At Pick Along Summer Camp\, kids will receive foundational skills from instructors on the same style of acoustic instruments played on the 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings (banjo\, guitar\, and fiddle). This month we will be doing a fun book-making craft! \nAbout “ Miss Dorothy and Her Bookmobile” \nFrom Gloria Houston and Susan Condie Lamb comes the true story of Miss Dorothy\, an enterprising and dedicated librarian who drove a bookmobile to bring books to her neighbors in Appalachia\, in this companion volume to My Great-Aunt Arizona. This nonfiction picture book is an excellent choice to share during homeschooling\, in particular for children ages 6 to 8. It’s a fun way to learn to read and as a supplement for activity books for children. \nDorothy’s dearest wish is to be a librarian in a fine brick library just like the one she visited when she was small. But her new home in North Carolina has valleys and streams but no libraries\, so Miss Dorothy and her neighbors decide to start a bookmobile. Instead of people coming to a fine brick library\, Miss Dorothy can now bring the books to them—at school\, on the farm\, even once in the middle of a river! \nThe book won the American Association of University Women’s North Carolina Juvenile Literature Award and was selected as the Independent Bookseller’s “Inspired Recommendations for Kids.” \nAbout the Author\n \nDr. Gloria Houston is internationally known as an educator and an author of multi-award winning\, best selling books for young readers\, as well as a writer of textbooks and other teaching materials. However\, she typifies herself as “first\, last and always\, a teacher.” As an author of critically acclaimed novels and picture books for young readers\, her books have won and been listed on more than forty awards and awards lists\, with one international award. \n  \n  URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/museum-story-time-miss-dorothy-and-her-book-mobile/ LOCATION:Birthplace of Country Music Museum\, 101 Country Music Way\, Bristol\, VA\, 24201\, United States CATEGORIES:Museum ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/StoryTime_Miss_Dorothy_Book_Mobile.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240813T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240813T203000 DTSTAMP:20240318T235611 CREATED:20240217T173817Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240219T162310Z UID:10030822-1723575600-1723581000@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org SUMMARY:Speaker Sessions: Brandon Story on Gospel According to Bristol DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, August 13\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. ET \nLocation: Birthplace of Country Music Museum (in-person); YouTube (virtual) \nCost: Free and open to the public \nRSVP HERE \nJoin us at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum on Tuesday\, August 13\, 7:00 p.m. for our monthly Speaker Sessions with Brandon Story on “Gospel According to Bristol.” Of the 76 sides recorded in Bristol in 1927\, 31 were were gospel songs. Lucky! Because a big crowd in all shapes and sizes piled into that old wagon at four o’clock one summer morning and piled out of it the next day at their relatives’ place on the north side of the mountains. All in good moods. The visitors settled in everywhere throughout the house\, laughing and making music and hugging everyone from the kitchen to the front room. And they stayed for weeks. Cynthia Rylant’s words and Stephen Gammell’s pictures take warm delight in the time the relatives came — when two sides of a family made one roomy middle. \nAbout the Author\n \nCynthia Rylant is the author of numerous distinguished novels and picture books for young readers. These ideas were especially important in early country music and its evangelical Christian foundation. The dichotomy of the sacred and the profane is accepted as being real in an evangelical Christian context. The oppositional nature of the sacred and the profane has been fundamental to the development of country music\, and more broadly\, roots music in general. Early roots musicians who were enculturated in an evangelical\, fundamentalist ideology intrinsically understood the sacred and the profane\, good and evil\, God and the devil. Life to them was an existential struggle against these opposing forces. The Carter Family\, even though they had a wide repertoire of songs from various genres\, are often remembered sentimentally as singers of sacred religious songs. They represent the sacred ideal in early country music\, which can be heard in their music and discerned in their choice of musical material and in their collective public persona. \nAbout Randal Williams \nDr. Williams was born at Fort Meade\, Maryland\, and has lived all over the country – however\, his ancestry runs deep in Tennessee\, and he considers himself a proud hillbilly. With a background in anthropology\, history\, and cultural studies\, Dr. Williams has worked as an archaeologist\, historic preservation planner\, cultural resources manager\, and university professor\, among myriad other occupations\, including everything from guitar builder to truck driver to chief cook and bottle washer. Dr. Williams comes from a long line of old-time and gospel musicians\, and he grew up steeped in Appalachian musical traditions. Dr. Williams holds a Ph.D. from Tennessee Technological University. His dissertation is titled The Lost Highway: The Dichotomy of the Sacred and the Profane in Early Country Music\, 1921-1957. \n  \n  \n  URL:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/event/speaker-session-dr-randal-williams-on-the-carter-family-a-representation-of-the-sacred-ideal-in-early-country-music-virtual-only/ CATEGORIES:Museum,Speaker Series ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://birthplaceofcountrymusic.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Randal-Williams_Web.jpg END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
