Summer Music Workshop – Beginner Youth


Date: Monday, July 20, 2020

Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Location: Birthplace of Country Music Museum

Note: The Birthplace of Country Music Museum is practicing health and safety guidelines set forth by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Therefore, workshops will be limited to 10 (ten) students, and masks, temperature and wellness checks, and social distancing will be required. This Summer Music Workshop is a one-day beginner-level workshop for ages 8-18. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the basics of either banjo, fiddle, or guitar with an instructor using our Pick Along Songbook, along with engaging in other museum-related activities.

What is included:

Instrumental (banjo, fiddle, guitar) instruction and an introduction to traditional songs in a small group setting

Tour of museum and Real Folk: Passing on Trades & Traditions Through the Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program special exhibit

Pick Along Songbook and take-home educational packet

Day schedule:

8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. – Check-in/registration; tuning and warm-up

9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. – Instrument Zoo, intro to instruments

9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. – Break out session with instrument groups

10:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. – Break (bring snacks from home)

10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Break out session with instrument groups

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Lunch (bring from home)

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – BCM Museum tour and special exhibit activity

2:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. – Break (bring snacks from home)

2:15 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Break out session with instrument groups (focus on 1-2 songs from Pick Along Songbook)

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Group instrument lesson (all groups together)

4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Sign-out/pick up

Cost is $75 per student with online registration/payment. The workshop is limited to 10 people. Participants may bring their own instrument or rent one from the museum for $5.
