Birthplace of Country Music Alliance Hosts 50th Live Radio Show from “Pickin’ Porch”

Birthplace of Country Music Alliance (BCMA) to Host 50th Live Radio Show from “Pickin’ Porch”

On Thursday, March 6 at 7:00 PM, the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance (BCMA) will host the 50th live radio broadcast of its “Pickin’ porch” show. The featured band that evening will be Melissa Wade and Wild Blue Yonder.

The BCMA “Pickin’ porch” shows feature local and regional bands performing Old-time, Bluegrass, Celtic, Gospel, and Country music. The BCMA “Pickin’ porch” shows began as an outgrowth of the opening of the BCMA museum, with informal performances held inside the museum. The BCMA began holding regular performances in the spring of 2001 and began broadcasting the shows live on the radio in August 2001.

“The response to these shows has been tremendous,” noted Tim White, host of the Pickin’ Porch live radio broadcast. White noted that each week the shows draw a live audience of over 300 people, plus those who listen along on radio. White noted that it is important to keep alive the tradition of live radio in this region that helped launch the careers of such legendary artists as Mac Wiseman, Ralph and Carter Stanley, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, “Tennessee” Ernie Ford, and other lesser know musicians.

Bill Hartley, BCMA Executive Director, commented that “the shows not only provide an opportunity for musicians to keep alive the tradition of live entertainment, but also help expose the general public to a wide cross section of traditional Appalachian music.” He noted that over fifty different bands have performed on the “Pickin’ porch.” Hartley added that these shows offer younger musicians an opportunity to showcase their talents, giving them experience and encouraging them to perform at other venues throughout our region.
