Bristol, VA-TN (May 7, 2003) The City of Kingsport’s Cultural Services Division has partnered with the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance to bring a series of concerts to Kingsport. The concerts will cover most areas of our musical heritage …bluegrass, old time, gospel, country, and Celtic. The concerts will be held at the Kingsport Renaissance Center Theatre and will be held monthly on Friday nights.
Bill Hartley, Executive Director of the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, stated that the BCMA was excited about this concert series. “It gives us an opportunity to showcase the excellent talent in the region, while reaching out to a larger audience and building awareness of this region’s musical heritage and the mission of the BCMA.”
The concert series kicks off on May 23rd with a concert and a play performed by the Kingsport Renaissance Players. The play is a comedy called “ Faith County”. It takes place in the present time although it feels like time has stood still. The setting is the Faith County Fairgrounds in the middle of nowhere in the south where beehive hairdos are still the rave and Friday nights are reserved for the tractor pull. This year’s play is dedicated to the memory of Nancy Pridemore, longtime director and friend. “Faith County” will begin at 6 pm. The VW Boys will follow at 8:00 pm. with a variety show of bluegrass music, comedy and magic.
Admission to this and the other shows in the series is $5. Tickets will be available at the door, with no advance tickets. For more information, contact the Renaissance Center at (423) 392-8414.
