Mountain Empire Community College’s second annual Mountain Music School is just around the corner. Music School Coordinator, Ron Short, reminds all potential students “We’ve had a great second year response so far”, says Short, “and we are worrying that we will have to turn away students or add more staff. This is both good news and bad news. Obviously the school is a success and meets a need that has not been met, but it is not easy to find teachers with skills in Old –Time banjo and fiddle, so hopefully we are training our future teachers.” Mountain Empire’s Mountain Music School begins July 31 and runs through August 4th, 9 to 3 each day and culminates in a full school musical recital where students are awarded certificates of completion and ticket vouchers to attend the Carter Fold Music Festival August 4th and 5th. Along with classes, there is a Masters Concert each day at 12 noon featuring musicians from the region, which is open and free to the public. Guests will include “Papa Joe Smiddy, Emily and Martha Spencer from White Top Mountain, Dale Jett from the Carter Fold, and Rich Kirby from WMMT at Appalshop |
