Richard "Dick" Burnett became a professional musician after being blinded by a gunshot wound during a 1907 robbery. Burnett began playing with the younger Rutherford in 1914. Burnett's 1913 ballad "Farewell Song evolved into "I Am The Man Of Constant Sorrow", made popular in the 2000 Coen Brothers' film "O Brother Where Art Thou". Burnett & Rutherford played in an archaic 'unison' style that helped preserve mid-19th century musical forms.
Burnett & Rutherford made their first recordings for Columbia in Atlanta, Georgia on November 6, 1926.
Recordings include:
- Lost John
- Little Stream of Whiskey
- Billy in the Low Ground
- Cumberland Gap
