Mountain Music – Then & Now

John VanAarsdall (CanJoe John)

On May 4, 2006, Mr. John VanAarsdall (CanJoe John) will appear at the Cameo Theatre from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. and present an educational and entertaining concert on the topic “Mountain Music – Then & Now.” He will compare and contrast the evolution of song styles, song contents, and musical instruments.

CanJoe John will cover the basic construction of the early Appalachian musical instruments and demonstrate performance technique. He will sing some of the songs of international origin that early settlers brought to the Appalachian area and will explore the progression of the longevity and the losses in our music.

This is a local history lesson and so much more. It will be a lot of fun as well as a walk down memory lane listening to the “old timey” music from our hills.

Tickets are $6 for general admission, $5 for students and senior citizens, lap babies are free. Group rates are available. Call 423-878-6279 to purchase tickets or for additional information.

This project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
